High School Students Can "Discover Pharmacy" During Virtual Two-Day Camp at Wilkes University August 18-19

by Vicki Mayk

Wilkes-Barre, PA (06/30/2020) — Wilkes University's Nesbitt School of Pharmacy will provide high school juniors and seniors with a prescription for a successful career during this summer's virtual Discover Pharmacy camp. The two-day camp runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 18, and Wednesday, Aug. 19. The fee is $40 per student. Deadline to register is July 31.

This summer's Discover Pharmacy camp is fully online, but will still feature hands-on activities. The Nesbitt School of Pharmacy will mail a camp kit directly to participating students' homes. With the kit and some common household items, campers will have everything they need for an interactive, remote experience.

Attendees will get a behind-the-scenes look at pharmacy and participate in activities, including:

  • Naloxone training
  • Making cough drops
  • Calculating and drawing acetaminophen dosages
  • Dissolving over-the-counter medications
  • Building a heart model to explore anatomy and physiology concepts
  • Learning how pharmacists help battle cancer
  • Competing in pharmacy jeopardy.

During camp, students also will examine public health issues, pharmacogenomics, chromatography and patient education. Participants will learn about the application process for pharmacy school, receive tips on preparing for the Nesbitt School of Pharmacy and discuss a variety of rewarding career paths.

Discover Pharmacy campers will have an opportunity to talk with current pharmacy students, faculty and deans while combining hands-on activities to introduce them to pharmacy's dynamic blend of science and patient care.
