Luzerne County SHINE Hosts Family Resource Night at Wilkes University on Feb. 11

Wilkes-Barre, PA (02/07/2020) — Luzerne County SHINE at Wilkes University will host a family resource night on Feb. 11 from 4 to 6 p.m. The event, which will feature representatives from a dozen social service agencies, will take place at the Henry Student Center, 84 W South Street in Wilkes-Barre. Families of current students are invited to learn about free community services that they may qualify for. These services include WIC, safety, dental, and counseling services, as well as information on obtaining a GED, financial literacy, health and nutrition, technical schools and self-sufficiency. Participating agencies include the Domestic Violence Service Center, Catholic Social Services, Volunteers in Medicine, Victims Resource Center, Children's Service Center, CEO, Fortis, Advantage, Pennsylvania CareerLink, Luzerne County Community College, and Maternal and Family Health Services.

Luzerne County SHINE at Wilkes University provides students from first to fourth grade with after-school services. The centers operate four days a week. The program focuses on project-based STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) curriculum.

Students are recommended for the program by teachers or guidance counselors at their school. Parents interested in having their child attend should contact their child's school.

The program services nine after-school centers in Hanover Area, Hazleton Area, Greater Nanticoke Area, Pittston Area, Wilkes-Barre Area and Wyoming Valley West school districts.

SHINE, which stands for Schools and Homes in Education, was founded by State Sen. John Yudichak and former U.S. Rep Lou Barletta in fall 2015 in Luzerne County. Wilkes University serves as SHINE's higher education partner and serves as home for the program.
