Wilkes University and Lehigh Carbon Community College Announce Agreement for Early Childhood Education Students

Wilkes-Barre, PA (07/13/2020) — Wilkes University and Lehigh Carbon Community College have entered into a new articulation agreement that will help LCCC graduates transfer to Wilkes to complete their bachelor's degrees. Under the new agreement, students who earn an associate degree in early childhood education from LCCC can seamlessly transfer into the Wilkes bachelor's degree program in elementary and early childhood education as a junior. As part of the agreement, 61 credits earned at LCCC will transfer to Wilkes.

Wilkes President Greg Cant and LCCC President Ann D. Bieber have signed the agreement. It formalizes the relationship between the institutions, streamlining the admission process for interested students.

"This articulation agreement builds on Wilkes University's tradition of providing access to college for those seeking a four-year degree. There is a national call for highly qualified early childhood educators and this agreement encourages students committed to fulfilling that need to continue their education," said Wilkes President Cant. "We are pleased to partner with Lehigh Carbon Community College to provide this educational opportunity."

"This agreement further broadens the opportunities that our graduates have to pursue their bachelor's degree and specifically for our students in the early childhood program," said LCCC President Bieber. "Both LCCC and Wilkes are committed to student success and to giving students a seamless path to a higher education. We look forward to working together to benefit students."

Wilkes University's elementary and early childhood education program leads to pre-kindergarten through fourth grade certification. It includes an 18-credit minor in reading education. Students study how to communicate and engage with young students while learning how to support their teaching with 21st century ideas and technology. Wilkes also offers an online pathway for completing the degree in addition to traditional face-to-face classes on its campus.
