Wilkes University Launches Master's Degree in Pharmacology and Medicinal Chemistry

The program was developed in response to projected job growth for medical scientists.

Wilkes-Barre, PA (04/15/2019) — Wilkes University's Nesbitt School of Pharmacy is expanding its program offerings with the launch of a Master of Science in pharmacology and medicinal chemistry. The 36-credit program is a two-year, research-driven master's degree that prepares students for a career in the pharmaceutical or biomedical industry, or for entry into a doctoral program. Prospective students can apply now to start this fall.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the demand for medical scientists is projected to grow 13 percent from 2016 through 2026, representing over 16,000 new jobs. The program prepares students by addressing advanced scientific and pharmaceutical concepts in a hands-on environment that emphasizes research and industry application.

"Medical scientists are critical to improving human health, researching and developing treatments to combat disease," said Dean of the Nesbitt School of Pharmacy, Scott Stolte. "We are so pleased to offer this degree with our hallmark emphasis on mentoring and personal attention, and at a tuition rate that is less than many of our competitors."

The master's degree is designed for those with a degree in pharmaceutical science, chemistry, biology or a related field. Students will learn about the disposition of drugs in humans while discussing the latest medicinal developments, regulations and therapies. Courses address cell biology, toxicology, molecular biology, medicinal chemistry and pharmacology.

"Students will work with the same equipment that is used in the pharmaceutical industry. It's this kind of hands-on learning that sets Wilkes graduates apart in the field," said Professor and Chair of pharmaceutical sciences, Zbigniew J. Witczak.

Applicants must apply online and submit completed recommendation forms, official undergraduate transcripts and a résumé or curriculum vitae.

Prospective students must apply by July 31 for fall consideration. More information at www.wilkes.edu/MSPS.
