Eileen Friery of Kenosha, Wis. was awarded the U.S. Public Heath Service Award Excellence in Public Health Pharmacy Award

Wilkes University Pharmacy student Eileen Friery of Kenosha, Wis., a Pharmacy major and a Spanish minor, was recognized for her community service work and recently was the recipient of a United States Public Health Service Excellence in Public Health Pharmacy Award.

Frierysucessfully target several Healthy People 2020 goals through extracurricular activities at Wilkes University. She served as a volunteer at Ruth's Place, a women's shelter in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. and facilitated and coordinated over-the-counter medication safety presentations to over 200 fifth and sixth grade students at local schools.

She also led "Relay for Heat" with the Wilkes Running Club to help raise money for local families who cannot afford heat in the wintertime. Friery also volunteers at a free clinic where she provides translation services, using her Spanish minor as well as dispensing medications to patients who do not have insurance.

Friery was featured in Happening's Magazine annual issue profiling college students in Northeastern Pennslyvania. This year's issue, title "The Sky if the Limit," focused on nine students who are climbing to new heights in community service to help make the world a better place.
