Marrissa Fedor of Hanover Township, Pa. Student Teaching In Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

2012 Feb 8

Marrissa Fedor of Hanover Township, Pa. is one of six Wilkes University education majors teaching abroad in a new exchange program at the Sri Utama International School in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The participating students' areas of specialization vary from secondary English and history to elementary and special education. They will spend seven weeks student teaching under the guidance of Gina Morrison, associate professor of education at Wilkes, giving them a first-hand opportunity to experience cultural diversity.

The international school in Malaysia enrolls students from all over the world in its primary and secondary education programs. The school wants to learn more about American teaching methods, and all instruction is in English. Morrison developed a relationship with the school when she spent her sabbatical year teaching in Kuala Lumpur at the Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). Due to the success of Morrison's experiences, Wilkes decided to promote its first teaching abroad opportunity for education students.

Fedor studied english/secondary education at Wilkes. She is the daughter of Joan and Martin Basar. The six participating students were chosen via a competitive selection process, and after they return from teaching in Malaysia, they will complete the remainder of the spring semester student teaching at schools in Pennsylvania.
