Wilkes University Selects Sofia Soares of Effort, Pa., as Drum Major

Wilkes University recently selected Sofia Soares of Effort, Pa., as a drum major. Soares will join fellow drum major Martina Barna to lead the University's new marching band - the only collegiate marching band in the region - when it debuts at the Colonels' first home football game in fall 2014. The women were chosen following auditions held earlier in the spring 2014 semester. Barna is a sophomore chemistry major and Soares is a sophomore pre-pharmacy student. They said that the new band gives them an ideal opportunity to enjoy a favorite activity while pursuing their academic interests. Philip G. Simon, associate professor of performing arts, will direct the band, which will perform in drum corps style and will include wind and percussion musicians and a color guard.
