Wilkes University Student Dian McKinney of Slatington, Pa., Awarded Commonwealth Good Citizen Scholarship

2017 Oct 3

Wilkes University student Dian McKinney of Slatington, Pa., was awarded the Commonwealth Good Citizen Scholarship in the amount of $2,500. The scholarship is awarded by the Association of Independent Colleges and Universities of Pennsylvania. McKinney is a senior English and secondary education dual-major with a minor in history. This scholarship is reserved for full-time undergraduate students who have shown an extraordinary commitment to community service and who have demonstrated creativity in shaping their volunteer activities.

McKinney has participated in various volunteer activities, highlighting in her scholarship essay a Wilkes Alternative Spring Break trip to the Dominican Republic she took her sophomore year. In this trip, McKinney taught English in a one-room school house with her peers. McKinney was also appointed the Community Service Coordinator for the First Year Student orientation in summer 2017 where she created new on-campus activities for students while incorporating local volunteer initiatives.

The Good Citizen Scholarship is made possible by two endowments established at the Association of Independent Colleges and Universities of Pennsylvania and is only available to students who attend a school that is a member of the association. Ten students were selected for the scholarship out of 89 eligible institutions.

Only one student per university may apply for the Commonwealth Good Citizen Scholarship. The applicants must include the finished application and essay, a copy of their transcript, a letter of recommendation and any other materials that the student may deem fit to their selection.
