Wilkes University Student Jasmine Quintana of Scranton, Pa., Participates in Alternative Spring Break Trip to Costa Rica

2017 Mar 21

Jasmine Quintana of Scranton, Pa., was one of nine Wilkes University students who participated in an alternative spring break trip to Playas del Coco, Costa Rica. Alternative spring break offers students an opportunity to perform community service while experiencing a different culture and developing their leadership, teamwork and critical thinking skills.

Before the trip Wilkes students collected school supplies on campus which they donated to schoolchildren in Liberia, Costa Rica, an impoverished neighborhood composed mostly of Nicaraguan illegal immigrants. Students also offered them free after school tutoring and English classes. They assisted at the Rincon de la Vieja National Park with the cleaning of trails and infrastructure, and the Las Pumas Rescue Center to protect and rehabilitate trafficked animals. Students also visited Las Isletas in Nicaragua, which were formed by the Mombacho volcano.

Andrew Miller, associate professor of political science, led the student trip.
