Wilkes University Student Rebecca Voorhees Awarded Collegiate Marching Band Festival Scholarship
2017 Oct 18
Senior English major Rebecca Voorhees of Tobyhanna, Pa., was awarded the Collegiate Marching Band Festival Scholarship. The award was presented at the 22nd Collegiate Marching Band Festival on Oct. 1 at the J. Birney Crum Stadium in Allentown, Pa. Voorhees is the first assistant drum major for the Marching Colonels.
"It was an absolute honor and surprise to receive the CMBF Scholarship. After the Wilkes University Marching Colonels performed, I expected to step off the field right away but my name was announced along with a short excerpt from my application letter," Voorhees said. "I was overwhelmed with pride and gratitude. I am thrilled to represent both the marching band and Wilkes University in my leadership position as assistant drum major. Most of all, my accomplishment would not have been possible without the support of my peers and the guidance of my instructors."
Voorhees was one of 36 applicants for the $1,000 scholarship. She was selected based upon her GPA and leadership position along with her submitted essay. This is the second year the scholarship was offered.
The Wilkes University Marching Colonels was introduced in 2014. It is the region's only collegiate marching band. They are one of the most visible groups on campus, performing at home football games and other on- and off-campus events. The band marches in drum corps style, complete with wind and percussion instruments and guard. For more information, visit www.wilkes.edu/marchingband.
