Wilkes University Student Shana Noon of Mahanoy City, Pa., Participates in Alternative Spring Break Trip to Costa Rica

2015 Mar 20

Shana Noon of Mahanoy City, Pa., was one of six Wilkes University students who participated in an alternative spring break trip to San Marcos, Costa Rica.

Alternative spring break offers students an opportunity to perform community service while experiencing a different culture and developing their leadership, teamwork and critical thinking skills. The students assisted local schools with construction and other maintenance projects.

Before the trip they collected school supplies on the Wilkes campus which they donated to 140 schoolchildren in Costa Rica. The students also visited a coffee farm and co-op, where they collected coffee beans and learned how the beans are prepared for consumption. Before returning to the United States, the students had an opportunity to explore Irazu Volcano National Park, the Basilica of Our Patron Virgin of the Angels and the Ruins of Cartago.

Andrew Miller, associate professor of political science, led the student trip.
