Wilkes University Student in College of Science and Engineering, Joshua Jarmoski of Morgantown, Pa., 19543 Presents Senior Project

2018 May 9

Wilkes University electrical engineering student, Joshua Jarmoski of Morgantown, Pa., 19543, presented a senior project on April 28. The event was attended by faculty, friends and family. Engineering students in the University's College of Science and Engineering are required to complete a senior project as part of the requirements to complete their degrees.

Jarmoski's project was entitled, "Electronic - Vertical Take-Off Landing System." Team members designed a lift and propulsion system to increase the effectiveness of drones. This was accomplished through a decrease in moving parts and the use of an air-multiplier system. The device incorporates an air-multiplier ring made of 3D printed ABS plastic connected to a housing holding a wing. Servo motors controlled by an Arduino microcontroller are connected to the ring to control the direction of the lift force. This housing is only one of two that would attach to each side of the drone body to complete the drone. Experimental testing led to results of 0.7 lbs, lift generated with an air velocity of 6 m/s confirming that this method has a potential of generating useful lift forces in aircraft. Jarmoski worked with faculty advisor Mohsen Ghamari, assistant professor of mechanical engineering.
