MEDIA ADVISORY: Wilkes University Holds Clothesline Display Project on April 25, Highlights Intimate Partner Violence
Wilkes-Barre, PA (04/23/2019) — The issue of sexual and intimate partner violence will be highlighted when Wilkes University holds the Clothesline Display Project on April 25. The event, coordinated by Title IX coordinator Samantha Hart, will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Henry Student Center, 84 West S. St. Wilkes-Barre.
The Clothesline Display Project is a visual display used as a vehicle for people affected by violence to express their emotions by decorating a shirt. The shirts are hung on a clothesline to be viewed by others as testimony to the problem of sexual and intimate partner violence.
The purpose of Clothesline Display Project is to create awareness of the experiences of the victims and survivors of sexual and intimate partner violence, as well as to assist in the healing process.
Shirts follow a color-guideline for meaning:
- White represents people who have died due to violence.
- Yellow or beige represents battered or assaulted victims.
- Red, pink or orange are for survivors of rape and sexual assault.
- Blue or green represent survivors of incest or child sexual violence.
- Purple or lavender represents people attacked because of their gender identity or sexual orientation.
- Black represents people permanently handicapped as a result of violence or who were abused because they are disabled.
Campus support services information will be available and a representative from the Domestic Violence Service Center will also be present to provide resources.
