Wilkes University will commemorate the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.'s death with an event on April 5. The event, sponsored in collaboration with The Campus Interfaith office and the office of Diversity Affairs, will take place from noon to 1 p.m. in the Henry Student Center Ballroom, 84 West South Street Wilkes-Barre.
The event's theme is "Shedding the Light"and will feature keynote speaker Ron Felton. Felton was the first vice president of the NAACP Wilkes-Barre chapter. The Black National Anthem and American National Anthem will be performed by students Micaela Oliverio and Josh Shepherd. Helen Davis, co-chair of The Council on Diversity, Inclusion, and Equity, will speak after a greeting by president Patrick Leahy. Student Government president Cody Morcom and vice president of Multicultural Student Coalition Conroy Yearde will also speak.
Martin Luther King Jr., an American clergyman and civil rights leader, was assassinated on April 4, 1968 at the Lorraine Motel, Memphis, Tenn.
