Wilkes University's Women Empowered by Science Summer Camp encourages girls' interest in studying science and pursuing science careers. Students participate in different laboratories each day, allowing them to sample many areas of science through investigative experiences and projects.
WHO: Girls entering seventh or eighth grade from area middle schools.
WHERE: Several locations on the Wilkes University campus
WHEN: July 22-26
OPPORTUNITIES FOR COVERAGE/PHOTO OPPORTUNITIES:
NOTE: OTHER LABS AND TIMES ARE AVAILABLE FOR COVERAGE.
Monday, July 22
- Solar Cooking: 12:35 to 1:40 p.m. Cohen Science Center 102: Campers will investigate the benefits of supplying energy needs from renewable energy sources. Each student will build a pizza box solar oven and will use them to cook up a treat.
- You Be the Veterinarian: 2:05 - 3:10 p.m., Cohen Science Center 219: Campers will work in groups to determine the cause of an illness when presented with a "sick animal" case study. Based on the results of lab tests, campers will be charged with determining a diagnosis for their animal. Live animals will also be used as part of this lab experience, but these animals will be in excellent health.
Tuesday, July 23
- Oil Spill: 9:05 to 10:10 a.m., Cohen Science Center 119: Campers will participate in a review of recent oil spills and work through experimental methods to evaluate how the spill will travel. Groups will use various techniques to effectively remediate oil spills and discuss practical solutions to large spills.
- Neuroscience: Brain, Cake and Icing: 12:35-1:40 p.m., Cohen Science Center 102: In this lab, WEBS participants will learn about the four lobes of the brain and what each lobe controls by icing a "brain cake" and then, of course, eating it.
Wednesday, July 24
- Physics of Dance: 9:05-10:10 a.m., Dorothy Dickson Darte Center Dance Studio: How does physics affect how fast or slow a dancer spins? What does gravity have to do with how she balances? Why are her jumps so high? Students will find the answers to these questions while choreographing their own routine.
Thursday, July 25
- Robots: 9:05-10:10 a.m., 10:35-11:40 a.m., 12:35-1:40 p.m., 2:05-3:10 p.m, Stark Learning Center 411,405,409,424: Camp participants will program autonomous robots to complete basic missions in the lab. The programming techniques needed to accomplish the basic missions will be used in the robot game, "City Sights," from the First Lego League competition series. The robot games model a variety of challenges faced by urban planners. They include material delivery, infrastructure repair and toxic waste cleanup.
Friday, July 26
- Rainbow Density: 10:35-11:40 a.m., Cohen Science Center 423: Visually appealing chemistry experiments with vibrant colors using all household chemicals and ingredients will be used to explore chemistry concepts that include: surface area, polarity, density and synthesis of polymers.
