Sydney Lovett Awarded First Wilkes University/Weis Pharmacy Community Pharmacy Residency
Wilkes-Barre, PA (06/19/2020) — Sydney Lovett has been awarded the first Wilkes University/Weis Pharmacy Community Pharmacy Residency. The residency, awarded to a doctor of pharmacy graduate in the first post-graduate year, is a comprehensive experience for Doctor of Pharmacy graduates to develop and implement patient care programs in a community pharmacy setting. Lovett will work at a clinical site in the Weis Pharmacy in Schnecksville, Pa., as well as assist with teaching in Wilkes University's Nesbitt School of Pharmacy.
Lovett earned the Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center's College of Pharmacy and the Master of Public Health degree from the University of Memphis. Her advanced pharmacy practice experience includes rotations in medication safety at St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, ambulatory care at Cookeville Regional Medical Center, chemical dependency at the Veterans' Affairs Medical Center in Memphis, and in community pharmacy. She assisted with clinical research related to pediatric cancer and racial and ethnic disparities in statin treatment among diabetics.
She is a member of the American Society of Health Systems Pharmacists, the American Pharmacists Association - Academy of Student Pharmacists, the Student National Pharmaceutical Association, the Tennessee Pharmacy Association and Kappa Psi Pharmaceutical Fraternity.
The Wilkes University/Weis Pharmacy PGY1 Community Residency Program is a 12-month training program that will develop the resident into an innovative community pharmacist practitioner with diverse experiences in patient care and leadership. The resident will have the opportunity to work in an interprofessional, collaborative environment in experiences in community pharmacies, outreach clinics, underserved practices and with the Pennsylvania Pharmacist Care Network. The resident will develop the skills, confidence and experience to catalyze change and advance patient care services in community pharmacy practice.
Lovett's duties at the Weis Pharmacy will include participating in the site's accredited diabetes self-management education and support program and the diabetes prevention program. She also will be involved in other patient education and counseling activities at the site, including medication therapy management, point-of-care testing and immunizations. Lovett also will provide testing for COVID-19 as well as conducting antibody tests for the virus at the site. She will be supervised by Nicole Pezzino, residency program director and director of community outreach and innovation for the Nesbitt School of Pharmacy. Other residency faculty include Stephanie Doyle, residency site coordinator and Weis Pharmacy manager, Megan Graver, residency program preceptor and Weis pharmacist, and Kimmy Nguyen, residency program preceptor and assistant professor of pharmacy practice in the Nesbitt School of Pharmacy.
