Wilkes University Hosts Environmental Science Summer Day Camp for High School Students

by Kelly Clisham

Wilkes-Barre, PA (06/15/2018) — Wilkes University invites students entering grades 9 through 12 to take part in Environmental Science Summer Day Camp from July 31 to Aug. 2. Sponsored by the University's Department of Environmental Engineering and Earth Sciences, the three-day camp features environmental scientists and engineers guiding students through fun and educational outdoor experiences while encouraging stewardship of natural resources. Students will collect and analyze water, soil and macroinvertebrate samples, collect stream flow measurements and utilize geophysical instruments at Frances Slocum State Park, the Back Mountain Trail and Nesbitt Park. Then they will compare the data and interpret the impact of land use, development and conservation on water quality and quantity.

As students conduct scientific research, they will also gain experience in effective team, relationship and communication skills, leaving camp ready to act as environmental stewards in their schools and communities.

Environmental Science Summer Day Camp runs from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, July 31 to Aug. 2, 2018. Students will begin and end each day at Wilkes University's Cohen Science Center, 140 South River Street, Wilkes-Barre, Pa.

Cost of the camp is $100 and includes lunches, snacks, a water bottle and T-shirt.

Interested students must register at www.wilkes.edu/ESdaycamp. Space is limited, so registration will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.
