Wilkes University Hosts Middle- And High-School Students at Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science on March 3
Nearly 800 middle and high school students from seven counties compete
Wilkes-Barre, PA (03/01/2018) — Nearly 800 middle- and high-school students from seven northeast Pennsylvania counties will come to Wilkes University on March 3 when the campus hosts the Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science Region 2 Competition. The event begins with registration from 8 to 9 a.m. in the Arnaud C. Marts Sports & Conference Center.
Students attending the competition present papers about math and science research topics in sessions from 10:30 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. Sessions will be held in Wilkes' Cohen Science Center, the Stark Learning Center and Breiseth Hall. The facilities provide smart classroom technology similar to what students will use if they advance to state competition. Wilkes University science students, faculty and staff will lend their expertise and assist with the competition.
Awards will cap the day of activities at 4:30 p.m. when one sponsor per school can pick up their awards on the second floor of the Henry Student Center.
Participating schools come from the following counties: Lackawanna, Luzerne, Monroe, Pike, Susquehanna, Wayne and Wyoming.
Scientific disciplines covered in student research presentations include chemistry, physics, botany, earth and space science, ecology, zoology, microbiology, biochemistry, general biology and behavioral psychology. Presentations also are done in math and computer science. Excellence Awards are presented for the best presentation in each discipline in both the high school and junior high school levels.
Students also are interviewed for scholarships and fellowships during the competition.
