Wilkes University Nesbitt School of Pharmacy Participates in National Day of Service, Provides Patient Care in Community

Wilkes-Barre, PA (11/06/2019) — Student pharmacists from the Wilkes University Nesbitt School of Pharmacy will participate in the National Day of Service on Nov. 9 by offering patient care services to members of the community. The pharmacists and students will be offering free blood pressure screenings as well as free medication and immunization reviews to anyone in Luzerne, Lackawanna, Lehigh and Montgomery counties.

Participating locations include:

  • DePietro's Pharmacy - Dunmore, Pa., 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Medicap Pharmacy - Olyphant, Pa., 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Sheehans Pharmacy - Plains, Pa., 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Weis Markets - Schnecksville, Pa., 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Hartzell's Pharmacy - Catasauqua, Pa., 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Skippack Pharmacy - Skippack, Pa., 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Bechtels' Pharmacy - Lehighton, Pa., 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Wilkes piloted the event last year with The PA Pharmacists Care Network. The students had visited four pharmacies, providing services to more than 60 patients.

National Day of Service is an engagement program organized through the ACT (Academia-CPESN® Transformation) Pharmacy Collaborative. The ACT Pharmacy Collaborative is an operational learning and acting collaborative between schools of pharmacy and established clinically integrated networks of community-based pharmacies.

"Here at the Nesbitt School of Pharmacy, our faculty and staff have been focused giving our students the education, the training and the real-world experiences to help them navigate the ever-changing pharmacy industry," added Nicole Pezzino, director of community outreach and innovation with the Nesbitt School of Pharmacy. "Partnering with CPESN (Community Pharmacy Enhanced Services Network) pharmacies that are paving the way for pharmacies to focus on patient care delivery versus simply putting pills in bottles is an excellent way to get our students exposed the future of community pharmacy."
