Wilkes University Pharmacy Students to Offer Free Medication Consultations to Seniors

Wilkes-Barre, PA (09/13/2018) — Students from the Nesbitt School of Pharmacy at Wilkes University will offer free medication consultations to senior citizens from Luzerne County.

Many senior citizens have a list of prescription medications they take regularly and those prescriptions come with a list of questions on side effects, interactions with food and other drugs, and ways to manage rising costs.

As part of a required course on longitudinal care, student pharmacists will work under expert faculty, meeting with senior citizens one-on-one to offer advice on benefits and side effects of medications, programs to help with medication costs, available immunizations, ways to prevent falls, and programs to help manage chronic health issues.

Supported by the Luzerne County Area Agency on Aging, the program is confidential and free of charge. Senior citizens interested in volunteering for the program need to commit to spend about one hour every other week with their pharmacy student from now through April. Meetings can take place at home or a local senior center. Spanish-speaking students are available.

For more information, please contact the Luzerne County Area Agency on Aging at 570-822-1159.
