Wilkes University's Catherine H. Bone Lecture Series Features Renowned Chemist Geraldine Richmond, Oct. 17
Wilkes-Barre, PA (09/26/2018) — Renowned chemist, Geraldine Richmond, Ph.D., presidential chair in science and professor of chemistry at the University of Oregon, will deliver Wilkes University's Catherine H. Bone lecture on Wednesday, Oct. 17. She will speak at 7 p.m. in Stark Learning Center, room 101. Richmond will deliver the lecture "Mulling Over Emulsions: Molecular Assembly at Complex Liquid Surfaces." The lecture is free and open to the public.
The lecture focuses on the most recent scientific efforts in understanding the molecular properties of oil-water interface and the unique environment it provides for adsorption of soaps, polymers and macromolecules at both planar and nanoemulsion oil and water interfaces.
Richmond's research uses laser spectroscopy and computational methods focusing on understanding environmentally and technologically important processes that occur at liquid surfaces.
She is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. She serves as a member of the National Science Board, as the U.S. Science Envoy to the Lower Mekong River Countries and as secretary of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Richmond is the founding director of COACh a grass-roots organization formed in 1998 that has helped over 20,000 women scientists and engineers in career advancement in the U.S. and countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America.
The Catherine H. Bone Lecture series was made possible by the endowments of its namesake, who taught chemistry at Wilkes from 1946 to 1965.
