Wilkes University's Maslow Family Graduate Program in Creative Writing to Host Open House September 26

Wilkes-Barre, PA (08/22/2018) — Wilkes University's Maslow Family Graduate Program in Creative Writing will host an instant decision open house from 4 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 26 at Dr. Harold Cox Hall, 245 S. River Street, Wilkes-Barre. Attendees bringing writing samples can receive an instant admission decision. They will also have the opportunity to learn more about the program from the director, staff and alumni.

The Graduate Creative Writing program is offered in two formats. In the low-residency format, students learn online and attend two eight-day residencies each January and June. For the weekender program, students will learn online and attend four face-to-face weekend class sessions each term. Applications are due by Dec. 1 to start in January.

Wilkes offers the master of arts and master of fine art degrees in fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry, screenwriting, playwriting, publishing and documentary filmmaking. Program faculty are working, producing writers who mentor students one-on-one through the process of creating a full-length creative project. Among the program's nationally renowned faculty members are J. Michael Lennon, Kaylie Jones, Susan Cartsonis, Taylor Polites, Christine Gelineau, Beverly Donofrio, Ross Klavan and Jan Quackenbush. In a review process that is unique to Wilkes, students submit their final creative manuscripts to literary agents, publishers or producers for feedback, which is delivered during a private session with the outside reader.

Notable alumni include Marlon James, author of the 2015 American Book Award and 2015 Man Booker Prize Winner "A Brief History of Seven Killings;" Morowa Yejide, author of the novel "Time of the Locust," which was longlisted for the 2015 PEN/Robert W. Bingham Prize for Debut Fiction; and Scranton native Barbara J. Taylor, author of "Sing in the Morning, Cry at Night," which was a Publisher's Weekly 2014 summer reads pick.

Program graduates have published over 400 novels, memoirs and nonfiction works; produced over 90 plays; published over 50 chapbooks or poetry collections; produced over 60 films; published hundreds of articles, poems and short stories; started four new journals or publishing companies; and secured work as editors, teachers, filmmakers or other writing-related jobs. Tuition is $660 per credit plus applicable fees.

Interested open house attendees should register online at www.wilkes.edu/informationsession or by calling the Creative Writing office at (570) 408-4547.
