Wilkes University Students Receive Bierly Fellowships

by Vicki Mayk

Wilkes-Barre, PA (02/25/2020) — Two Wilkes University students have been awarded Bierly Fellowships to fund internship experiences in 2020. The Bierly Fellowship funds a credit or non-credit cooperative education or internship experience, an international or domestic study-away experience or off-campus undergraduate research.

Fellows are chosen in the fall and spring of each year from applications reviewed by the fellowship committee, which is headed by Sharon Castano, director of Internships.

The recipients are:

Alexander Norton, of Nanticoke, Pa., is a senior hospitality leadership and sports management major. Norton will be using his scholarship for an internship with Hurricane Junior Golf Tour. The scholarship will help him with travel expenses to the headquarters in Orlando, Fl., as well as travel across the country as a member of the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour team.

Angelina Davis, of Plains, Pa., is a senior communication studies major with a minor in international studies. She will be using her scholarship for a summer internship in the Republic of Panama, where she will be working at the international relations department of the Universidad Technológica de Panamá.

The award is open to full-time undergraduate students of any major, and is open to sophomore, junior or senior students. The awards range from $500 to $5,000, and can be used to cover transportation, housing and a biweekly stipend. To qualify, students must be a full-time undergraduate student in good academic and disciplinary standing, as well as have a 2.5 GPA at the time of application.

The Bierly Fellowship, established to make experiential learning opportunities affordable for Wilkes students, honors the late George W. Bierly. A native of Wilkes-Barre, Bierly graduated from Bucknell University Junior College in 1940, and earned his bachelor's degree in engineering from MIT in 1943. He served in the U.S. Army in the European Theater during WWII. He served as an instructor, administrative head and director of campus at Penn State Wilkes-Barre. Community affiliations included the Wilkes- Barre Chamber of Commerce, the United Way and the Westmoreland Club. The successful business and community leader retired in 1980. Bierly passed away in 2015.
