Wilkes University Fourth-Year Pharmacy Students Travel to Uganda For Pharmacy Practice Experience

Seven fourth-year student pharmacists in Wilkes University's Nesbitt School of Pharmacy, participated in a four-week advanced pharmacy practice experience in Uganda. The students got a global health perspective, learning how pharmacy is practiced in a Third World country.

Wilkes University Students Awarded Dr. Joseph Donald Stephens, DDS Global Scholars Award

Three Wilkes University students were awarded the Dr. Joseph Donald Stephens, DDS Global Scholars Award. The award provides students with scholarships to enhance their education via study abroad opportunities. The award was established by Panos Kalaritis, a member of Wilkes University's Class of 1977, and his wife, Deborah Stephens Kalaritis, a member of the Class of 1978, in honor of her father, who also graduated from Wilkes in 1951.

Wilkes University Students to Study in Spain with Assistance by Dr. Joseph Donald Stephens, DDS Global Scholars Award

Three Wilkes University students received a scholarship opportunity to study abroad this summer in Spain. Gabriel Velez of Allentown, Pa., Madison Trauger of Perjasie, Pa., and Cassie Oldt of McClure, Pa., received the Dr. Joseph Donald Stephens, DDS Global Scholars Award. The Dr. Joseph Donald Stephens, DDS Global Scholars Award provides students with scholarships to pursue their education in another country. The award was established by Wilkes University alumni Panos Kalaritis '77 and Deborah (Stephens) Kalaritis '78 in honor of her father, Joseph D. Stephens DDS, a 1951 graduate of Wilkes University. While in Spain, the students will take courses at Colegio Mayor Mara in Madrid and Malaga to earn nine credit hours. They will be immersed in the culture, visiting museums, monuments and learning with students local to the region.

Wilkes University Honors Program Students Attend International Conference In Vietnam

Four Wilkes University Honor Society students recently had an opportunity to visit Hanoi, Vietnam, to learn about making positive transformations in small communities. The students attended the University Scholars Leadership Symposium, an international conference intended to raise global awareness of disenfranchised communities.

Wilkes University Student Teachers Present at City University College, Malaysia

Six Wilkes University student teachers presented "Getting Ready for America" at City University College in Selangor, a suburb of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on March 3 as part of an international exchange program between the two institutions. Nearly 150 college students attended the presentation on American culture and customs given by Gina Zanolini Morrison, Wilkes associate professor of undergraduate education and student teaching abroad supervisor, and the student teachers.

Wilkes University Pharmacy Students Conduct Clinical Experience in Uganda

Two fourth-year pharmacy students from Wilkes University will participate in a Global Health Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiential rotation in Uganda. The students will spend four weeks learning about Ugandan medical and pharmaceutical practices and about the healthcare challenges facing the Ugandan people and medical community. They will also lecture at Makerere University to demonstrate American pharmaceutical practices to the university's pharmacy students and teach them new skills.

Wilkes University student Lorinette Williams of Swiftwater, Pa., a senior biology major, spent part of the summer studying abroad in Africa as part of a Wilkes global engagement and global research program. While visiting Karagwe, Tanzania, Williams completed a research project working with Dr. Linda Winkler of Wilkes University, analyzing maternal and neonate mortality at Nyakahanga Hospital.

Wilkes University Student Ashley Truglio of Stanhope, N.J., Studies Abroad in Tanzania, Africa

Wilkes University student Ashley Truglio of Stanhope, N.J., a sophomore nursing major, spent part of the summer studying abroad in Africa as part of a Wilkes global engagement program. While visiting Karagwe, Tanzania, Truglio interacted with a number of community organizations and leaders to learn more about the challenges facing the country. Truglio visited an all-girls private school and a co-educational private school.

Wilkes University Education Majors Teaching in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Six senior education majors from Wilkes University are teaching abroad in a new exchange program at the Sri Utama International School in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The participating students' areas of specialization vary from secondary English and history to elementary and special education. They will spend seven weeks student teaching under the guidance of Gina Morrison, associate professor of education at Wilkes, giving them a first-hand opportunity to experience cultural diversity. Wilkes University Nursing Students Serve in Africa

A team of four Wilkes University senior nursing students and assistant professor of nursing Wanda Ruppert accepted a check from the Zeta Psi organization who raised money to fund their medical trip to Burkina Faso and Kaya, Africa, from Jan. 14 through Jan. 22. Ruppert, Mary Kate Brady, Jasmine M. King, Kristin J. Parachin, and Jeanne Wood will travel with an interdisciplinary medical-surgical team to provide nursing care and health care education to people in need.
