Wilkes University Recognizes Seniors for Service as Resident Assistants

Wilkes University's Office of Residence Life recognized senior students for their service as resident assistants. Resident assistants are hired on the basis of character, leadership and their ability to interact with students. All resident assistants undergo extensive training so they may readily meet the needs of residential students. The primary function of the resident assistant staff is to build a community, which is crucial to a successful residence hall living experience. They practice an open-door policy and are available day and night should students need them.

Simon Chu of Gaithersburg, Md., Honored With Nada Vujica Memorial Award at Wilkes University

Simon (Chengyu) Chu of Gaithersburg, Md., was presented with the Nada Vujic Memorial Award by the Center for Global Education and Diversity at Wilkes University. The award has been given for 40 years to an international student who fosters internationalization on the Wilkes campus. He also was recognized for his service as a resident assistant by the Office of Residence Life. Chu graduated in May 2020 with a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in computer science. In the fall, he will begin a doctoral program at Carnegie-Mellon University.

Joshua Bradley of South Paris, Maine, was recognized with the Outstanding Service and Dedication Award by the Office of Residence Life at Wilkes University. The award recognizes the impact that he made impact on incoming students, residents, coworkers, and staff of Wilkes University in his role as a resident assistant. He received the Bachelor of Arts degree in political science in May 2020.

WilkesNow is a student-run television program which educates young media professionals and provides services to the local community on cable channel 97 for Service Electric Cable, Wilkes-Barre, and one closed-circuit channel. He also serves as the sports production assistant for WCLH. WCLH is an independent, specialty programming radio station operated by Wilkes students.

Wilkes University Students Serve as Orientation Leaders

Seven Wilkes University students are serving in leadership positions for the 2018 summer orientation for first-year students. Orientation will be held in two sessions, the first on July 1-2 and second July 15-16. Orientation staff members provide guidance to first-year students by assisting in the transition from high school to college both socially and academically. The students are: Kya Lewis of Secane, Pa., who is serving as the orientation coordinator. Dylan Fox of Denver, Pa., who is serving as the mentor coordinator. Erica Mabry of Boyertown, Pa., who is serving as the residence coordinator. Francesca Varela-Seri of Stewartsville, N.J., who is serving as the residence coordinator. Harrison Eckert of Orefield, Pa., who is serving as the community service coordinator. Maverick Reed of Curwensville, Pa., who is serving as the Wilkes Adventure Education Day coordinator. Shyann Barrett of Danville, Pa., who is serving as the Blue Army coordinator.

Resident assistants are responsible for crisis management, documenting policy violations, reporting maintenance requests and various other administrative tasks in campus residence halls where undergraduate students live.

Forty-five undergraduate students at Wilkes University have accepted on-campus leadership roles as resident assistants in campus residence halls where undergraduate students live. Resident assistants are responsible for fostering a residential environment supportive of individual student growth and development and encouraging on-campus community participation. They are appointed for an academic year and have the primary responsibility for a floor, wing or house.
