Two students in Wilkes University's Nesbitt School of Pharmacy recently published an article about mentoring in the May/June 2013 issue of Student Pharmacist, a national publication of the American Pharmacists Association.

The Wilkes University School of Nursing awarded the doctor of nursing practice degree to 14 members of the program's inaugural class. The degrees were awarded during the graduate commencement ceremony held May 18 at the Arnaud C. Marts Sports and Conference Center. The doctor of nursing practice program was established in May 2010 and is the first of its kind in northeastern Pennsylvania. It enrolls students from throughout the country.

Some 746 doctoral, master's and bachelor's degrees were awarded as Wilkes University for the first time held separate commencement ceremonies for graduate and undergraduate students on May 18, 2013. The 10 a.m. ceremony for graduate students and a 2 p.m. ceremony for undergraduates were held in the Arnaud C. Marts Sports & Conference Center. Graduates marched down South Franklin Street and entered the center to the music of bagpipers leading the procession.

More than 60 Wilkes University students, faculty and staff particpated in the annual Alternative Spring Break from March 2-9. Students participating in the program spend their spring break performing community service to help people in this country and around the world. Environmental engineering students on the Relay for Life team "Captain Planet and the Planeteers" found creative ways to raise money at Wilkes University. Members of the team collected dresses at Wilkes from faculty, staff, students and community members and then sold them at an event on March 16. The team collected over 230 dresses and raised $1,711, which will be used to support the University's Relay for Life event benefiting the American Cancer Society.

Wilkes University nursing students attended the Annual Convention of the Student Nurses Association of Pennsylvania (SNAP) from Nov. 14 thru 17 at the Nemacolin Woodlands Resort in Farmington, Pa. The convention hosted several events, including a National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) challenge, which Wilkes placed second in. Two Wilkes students presented resolutions at the conference, and sixteen students served as voting delegates. Six Wilkes University students gave a presentation at the Third International Problem-Based Learning Symposium in Singapore on March 8. The Wilkes team presented Fostering Global Connections: An American University's Student Teaching Program in Malaysia, a presentation focusing on the recently formed link between the Teacher Education Program at Wilkes and Sri Utama International Schools in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
