Four Wilkes University students participated in an alternative spring break trip in Kentucky by volunteering with the Christian Appalachian Project. Alternative spring break offers students an opportunity to perform community service while experiencing a different culture and developing their leadership, teamwork, and critical thinking skills.

Six Wilkes University students from the division of behavioral and social sciences traveled to Baltimore, Md., to participate in the Eastern Sociological Society Regional Conference held on Feb. 20, 2014. Andrew Wilczak, Wilkes assistant professor of sociology, accompanied the students, who are all members of the University's sociology/criminology club.

Wilkes University Students Intern in Mesa Via Semester in Mesa Program

Ten Wilkes University students from the school's northeast Pennsylvania campus are spending the spring semester in Mesa, Ariz., and interning at local businesses and nonprofit agencies as part of the Semester in Mesa program. The program allows undergraduate students to pursue internship opportunities with Fortune 500 companies and other businesses and offers them exposure to a different city and cultural opportunities.

Wilkes University Pharmacy Student Colleen Herman of Lancaster, Pa., Wins Pennsylvania Pharmacists Association Competition

Colleen Herman of Lancaster, Pa., won the Know Pain Know Gain Pharmacy Patient Counseling Competition administered by the Pennsylvania Pharmacists Association. The student competition was conducted at the association's annual Mid-Year Conference, held Jan. 24-26, 2014, in Bedford, Pa. Sponsored by the National Alliance of State Pharmacy Associations and Purdue Pharma, L.P., the competition consisted of a rapid fire question elimination round and a patient counseling round.

Wilkes University Inducts Students into International Honor Society in Education

Wilkes University recently inducted 11 education majors into Phi Phi, the University's chapter of the international honor society in education Kappa Delta Pi. At the ceremony the honorees received a certificate and honor cords to wear at graduation. Robert Gardner, Wilkes associate professor of education and honor society counselor, spoke about the power of teachers to affect positive change and challenged the teacher candidates to be reflective and adjust to their future students' needs.

Wilkes University Students Selected to Perform with PA Intercollegiate Band

Five Wilkes University students have been selected to perform with the 67th PA Intercollegiate Band at Shippensburg University on March 2, 2014. The band is composed of student musicians from universities and colleges across the state and is the longest running band of its kind in the nation. This year, the intercollegiate band has commissioned a new piece by composer Dana Wilson titled Quest, which will premiere at the March concert.

Wilkes University Theatre Presents The No Frills Revue

Wilkes University Theatre is staging an evening of sketch comedy and song, The No Frills Revue. Performances are being held on Feb. 14, 15, 21 and 22 at 8 p.m. and Feb. 16 and 23 at 2 p.m. at the Dorothy Dickson Darte Center. The revue was originally conceived by Martin Charnin, author of the musical Annie. Teresa Fallon, Wilkes director of theatre, is providing stage direction while musical direction is supplied by Ken McGraw.

Wilkes University Interim Provost Terese Wignot announced the Dean's List for the Fall 2013 Semester. To be named to the Dean's List, students must obtain a minimum 3.4 grade point average and carry at least 12 credits.

Wilkes University Freshmen Participate in Flood Stories Project

Wilkes University freshmen enrolled in a first-year foundations course called "The Power of Story" completed a flood stories project. A first-year foundations course is a course required by all Wilkes freshmen. The students collected oral histories of individuals who survived the September 2011 flooding in the Wyoming Valley.

Wilkes University inducted 16 students as full members into the Theta Delta Chapter of the national Beta Beta Beta biological honor society during a recent induction ceremony. An additional 15 students were inducted as associate members of the society. Valerie Kalter, associate professor of biology, serves as the chapter's faculty advisor.

Wilkes University Nursing Student Emily Christian of Northumberland, Pa., Wins SNAP Leadership Award

Wilkes University nursing student Emily Christian of Northumberland, Pa., won the Leader of Tomorrow Award at the annual Student Nurses' Association of Pennsylvania conference. Christian is a senior at Wilkes and the daughter of Gary and Joy Christian. Christian has demonstrated her leadership abilities at Wilkes, serving in the past as an E-mentor and Ally in the Wilkes Ally program and is president of the 2014 nursing graduating class.

Wilkes University's Dominick Costantino Receives Scholarship at PRSSA Convention

Dominick Costantino, a senior communication studies major from Hanover Township, Pa., was selected as a 2013 Betsy Plank Scholarship winner at the Public Relations Student Society of America Convention in Philadelphia. This is the first time a Wilkes University student received a national scholarship in public relations. He is the son of Bonnie and Dominick Costantino, Sr.

Wilkes University Communications Students Run The Beacon

Eleven Wilkes University students are gaining hands-on journalism experience this academic year as members of the campus newspaper, The Beacon. As a part of the newspaper staff, the students manage, edit, write and design the award-winning publication. The Beacon appears both in print and online. Loran E. Lewis, assistant professor of communications studies, serves as faculty advisor.

Wilkes University Freshmen Participate in Veteran's Oral History Project

Wilkes University freshmen students completed an oral history project as part of a first-year foundations course called "Be the Change." A first-year foundations course is a course required by all Wilkes freshmen. "Be the Change" focused on a service learning project that gathered the oral histories of northeast Pennsylvania veterans. During the semester, students met one-on-one with the veterans whose service ranged from World War II to Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Wilkes University Students Gain Public Relations Experience with Zebra Communications

Twenty-two Wilkes University students are gaining hands-on public relations experience this academic year as members of Zebra Communications. Zebra is a student-run public relations agency that works with 12-15 client-partners, including not-for-profit organizations, government agencies, small businesses, campus initiatives and regional grant-funded projects, each semester to create a public relations campaign of up to three months.

Wilkes University Theatre brings the whimsical world of Dr. Seuss to life as it presents Seussical on Nov. 8, 9, 15 and 16 at 8 p.m. and Nov. 10 and 17 at 2 p.m. in the Dorothy Dickson Darte Center on the University's campus. The musical is based on the works of Dr. Seuss and narrated by The Cat in the Hat. The play tells the story of Horton, an elephant who discovers a speck of dust containing Whos, including Jojo, a Who child sent to military school for thinking too many "thinks."

Student Government is the major decision- and policy-making organization for the student body at Wilkes University, providing student input on University policy and governing extracurricular life at Wilkes.

Wilkes University Theatre Students Part of Production Crew for "The Curious Savage" Sept. 26-29

Wilkes University Theatre will produce "The Curious Savage" Sept. 26-28 at 8 p.m. and Sept. 29 at 2 p.m. at the Dorothy Dickson Darte Center. Written by John Patrick and directed by Naomi Baker, associate professor of performing arts, this comedy about Ethel P. Savage, a woman recently widowed whose husband left her $10 million, questions conventional definitions of sanity while lampooning celebrity culture. General admission costs $10, $5 for students and seniors and free with a Wilkes ID. To reserve tickets or to request more information, call the box office at (570) 408-4540.
