Wilkes Teacher Education Faculty and Students Present in Singapore

Six Wilkes University students gave a presentation at the Third International Problem-Based Learning Symposium in Singapore on March 8. The Wilkes team presented Fostering Global Connections: An American University's Student Teaching Program in Malaysia, a presentation focusing on the recently formed link between the Teacher Education Program at Wilkes and Sri Utama International Schools in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The students completed part of their student teaching placements in Malaysia this spring, and they were accompanied at the conference by their student teaching supervisor, Gina Zanolini Morrison, associate professor of education. Wilkes University Inducts Area Students into Delta Mu Delta Honor Society

Wilkes University students were inducted into the Delta Mu Delta Business Administration Honor Society at the annual induction ceremony dinner on March 21. The keynote speaker was Mr. Chuck Cohen, president of Benco Dental Company and member of Wilkes University's Board of Trustees.

Wilkes University Students Inducted into National Education Honor Society, Kappa Delta Pi

Nineteen students were inducted the National Education Honor Society, Kappa Delta Pi at a March 20 ceremony. Members of the Wilkes University Undergraduate Education Department participated in the Spring Induction Ceremony celebrating the Phi Phi Chapter inductees of the National Education Honor Society, Kappa Delta Pi (KDP). The 19 inductees were chosen because of their outstanding character, service to Wilkes University and the larger community, a high grade point average, and a desire to enter the teaching profession as competent, caring, and ethical educators. In the presence of their family and friends, they pledged to uphold the three ideals of KDP: fidelity to humanity, science, and toil in these words. The pledge of Kappa Delta Pi reads, "To teach that our words inspire a will to learn, to serve that each day may enhance the growth of exploring minds, and to live to guide young and old to know the truth and love the right." Jamie Barlow is the Wilkes Chapter president, and Julie Keefer is the outgoing president. Other officers in the honor society are Amanda Coombs and Amanda Fasciana. Dr. Robert S. Gardner, Assistant Professor of Education at Wilkes University is the Kappa Delta Pi counselor and also a member of KDP. The following local students were inducted:

Wilkes University Education Majors Teaching in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Six senior education majors from Wilkes University are teaching abroad in a new exchange program at the Sri Utama International School in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The participating students' areas of specialization vary from secondary English and history to elementary and special education. They will spend seven weeks student teaching under the guidance of Gina Morrison, associate professor of education at Wilkes, giving them a first-hand opportunity to experience cultural diversity. Wilkes University Announces 2011 Sidhu Scholars

Eight Wilkes University students were named 2011 Sidhu Scholar by the Jay S. Sidhu School of Business and Leadership at Wilkes University. Sidhu Scholars are selected by faculty and staff out of the top students in each class year. The scholars are funded by the Outstanding Leaders Scholarship Program, created to help identify and educate the leaders of tomorrow. All Sidhu Scholars receive a $2500 scholarship, leadership training, an international trip, a yearly field trip, dinner at the dean's house, and a yearly banquet. This year's recipients were also privileged to meet Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Thomas Friedman, keynote speaker for Wilkes University's Outstanding Leadership Forum on Nov. 16, 2011.

Wilkes University hosted its 11th annual induction ceremony for the Thelta Delta Chapter of the Beta Beta Beta biological honor society on Sunday, Nov. 5. Fourteen full members and 14 associate members were inducted.

Wilkes University Students Meet Stanford University Scientist Paul Wender

Sixteen students from Wilkes University's chemistry, biochemistry, and pharmacy programs were selected to have lunch with renowned scientist Paul Wender, Wilkes University class of 1969. Wender, of the department of chemistry and the department of chemical and systems biology at Stanford University, gave the inaugural Catherine H. Bone Lecture at Wilkes on Oct. 27. He spoke on "Molecular Frontiers and Future Transformative Therapies for AIDS, Alzheimer's, and Resistant Cancer."

Wilkes University Students Recognized for Photo Submissions

Students were recognized for their photo submissions in the Colonels Abroad Photo Contest at Wilkes University. The contest featured 60 photos taken by students and faculty that highlighted their study abroad experiences in Costa Rica, Africa, Spain, France, Wales, Italy, England and more. Wilkes University Pharmacy Students Serve in Guatemala

A team of four Wilkes University pharmacy students joined Bernard Graham, dean of Wilkes' Nesbitt College of Pharmacy and Nursing, and over fifty health care professionals from the United States and Canada to aid the Glens Falls Medical Mission Foundation on a trip to Nueva Santa Rosa, Guatemala, from April 28 to May 7. The students worked as pharmacy technicians and translators, helping physicians choose appropriate drug therapy for their patients, negotiating with local pharmacies for special medication, and providing basic medical care for needy villagers. The team also visited an orphanage for young girls where they donated toys and clothing. Team members from Wilkes University include:

Team from Wilkes University Volunteers in Nicaragua

A Wilkes University team of three students, one staff and one faculty member traveled to Jinotega, Nicaragua to work with Orphanage Outreach from May 21-28. The team taught colors, shapes, and numbers to underprivileged preschool children in the mornings and spent their afternoons teaching English at a local elementary school. The team learned about the Nicaraguan culture by visiting a Women's Cooperative, touring a coffee farm, and walking through the impoverished areas around Jinotega. They were introduced to a community leader who talked with them about the particular need for education and sports outlets in their country, to keep children out of gangs and away from drugs.
