Wilkes University Student Pharmacist Kayla Hiryak Awarded AFPE Gateway to Research Scholarship

Wilkes University student pharmacist Kayla Hiryak of Boyertown, Pa., was awarded the American Foundation for Pharmaceutical Education Gateway to Research Scholarship for her research. Hiryak worked with mentor Adam VanWert, associate professor of pharmaceutical sciences, on her project entitled, "Synthetic Biological Approach to Treating Calcium Oxalate Kidney Stones." Hiryak was one of 16 winners out of hundreds of nominees from across the country and the first Wilkes student to receive the award.

Wilkes University's Chapter of Kappa Psi Pharmaceutical Fraternity Earns Top Performing Chapter Award

Wilkes University's Delta Omicron chapter of Kappa Psi Pharmaceutical Fraternity was named a Top Performing Chapter for the 2016-2017 school year at the 58 Grand Council Convention held from Aug. 1-5 in Naples, Fla. Out of 110 collegiate chapters, Delta Omicron was one of 36 chapters to receive the award. Delta Omicron earned 93 percent of the points possible on measures such as community service and organization involvement.

Wilkes University Students Present Research at the American Psychological Association Convention

Four Wilkes University students traveled to Washington, D.C., August 3-6 to present research at the American Psychological Association convention. The students presented research with psychology department faculty members associate professor Jennifer Thomas and assistant professor Ellen Newell. The projects focused on factors that inspire students to engage in behaviors to reduce prejudice, discrimination, and social injustice as well as the health benefits and risks associated with participating in these actions.

Wilkes University Nesbitt School of Pharmacy Residency Matches for 2017

Wilkes University's Nesbitt School of Pharmacy announced residency placements for students receiving the doctor of pharmacy degree in May 2017. Wilkes continued to match pharmacy students seeking residency training at a rate above the national average. Nationally, there were 3,497 residency positions offered and 5,160 applicants. Sixty-eight percent of those who applied for residencies were matched with a program.

Wilkes Marching Colonels Choose Leadership Positions for 2017

The Wilkes University Marching Colonels leadership positions have been chosen for the 2017 season. The region's only collegiate marching band marches in drum corps style, complete with wind and percussion instruments and guard. The Wilkes University Marching Band is one of the most visible groups on campus, performing at home football games and other on- and off-campus events.
