Mechanical Engineering Students Present Research at Conference

Wilkes University assistant professor of physics Del Lucent and mechanical engineering students, Michael O'Brien of Quakertown, Pa., and Daniel Sales of Laflin, Pa., attended the annual meeting of the Biophysical Society, held Feb. 17-21, 2018, in San Francisco, Calif. The students presented their poster and data on topological data analysis of protein dynamics using persistent homology. The project uses a mathematical technique, topological data analysis, to look for patterns in large simulations of protein folding. Protein folding is an action that occurs on the cellular level and analyzing it can be used to research treatments for a variety of disorders.

Wilkes University Pre-Dental Students Participate in Benco Family Foundation's Lessons in a Lunchbox

Two Wilkes University pre-dental students, Jasmin Patel and Victoria Bilski, participated in the Benco Family Foundation's Lessons in a Lunchbox event on Feb. 1. The event catered to second and third graders in the Wilkes-Barre Area School District and taught the importance of proper nutrition and oral hygiene.

Wilkes University Students Participate in Second Annual Wyoming Valley Undergraduate History Conference, Feb. 21

The Wilkes University history department will host the second annual Wyoming Valley Undergraduate History Conference on Feb. 21. The conference will take place from 4-7 p.m. in the Cohen Science Center, 140 S. River St., Wilkes-Barre. The conference features research presentations by 11 students from four colleges and universities. In addition to Wilkes, participating schools include Kings College, Marywood University and University of Scranton. The conference is free and open to the public.

Wilkes University Theatre presents Arthur Miller's acclaimed drama The Crucible. The performances will take place on Feb. 22, 23 and 24 at 8 p.m. with matinee performances on Feb. 24 and 25 at 2 p.m The production will occur at Wilkes' Dorothy Dickson Darte Center for the Performing Arts, 239 S. River St.

Wilkes University Students Inducted Into Tri Beta National Biological Honor Society

Wilkes University inducted 15 students as full members into the Theta Delta Chapter of the Beta Beta Beta national biological honor society during an induction ceremony held during the fall 2017 semester. An additional 12 students were inducted as associate members. Full members are juniors or seniors who have completed at least 16 credits in biology with at least a 3.25 grade point average and a 3.0 overall GPA. Associate members are sophomores and juniors who have completed fewer than 16 biology credits with at least a 3.25 grade point average and a 3.0 overall GPA. Beta Beta Beta was founded in 1922 at Oklahoma City University by Dr. Frank G. Brooks and his students. The idea of an honor society and professional society for biology students spread and by 1925 the society became a national organization. The Theta Delta Chapter was installed at Wilkes in 2001.

Wilkes University AFROTC Cadet Kaitlynne Young Earns Commission at Dec. 4 Ceremony

Wilkes University senior Kaitlynne Young of Hawley, Pa., was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force during a Dec. 4 ceremony. The commissioning ceremony was held in the ballroom of the Henry Student Center. Young, who will graduate in January with a degree in accounting, earned her commission through the University's Air Force ROTC Detachment. After graduation, she will be stationed at Goodfellow Air Force Base in San Angelo, Texas, and will serve as an Air Force Intelligence Officer.

Wilkes University Awards More Than 300 Degrees At Winter Commencement Ceremony on January 21

Wilkes University awarded 369 bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees when it held its winter commencement ceremony on Sunday, January 21. The event occurred at 1 p.m. in the Henry Gymnasium of the Arnaud C. Marts Sports and Conference Center, 274 South Franklin St. in Wilkes-Barre.

Wilkes University Students Selected to Perform with Pennsylvania Intercollegiate Band Festival

Three Wilkes University students were selected to participate in the Pennsylvania Intercollegiate Band Festival at Mansfield University on Feb. 23-25. The Wilkes students were recommended by Philip Simon, associate professor of music and director of the bands and chosen from a group of more than 200 student applicants throughout the state. A total of 115 musicians will form the Pennsylvania Intercollegiate Band, the oldest continuously performing state intercollegiate ensemble in the nation.

Wilkes University Student Dian McKinney of Slatington, Pa., Awarded Commonwealth Good Citizen Scholarship

Wilkes University student Dian McKinney of Slatington, Pa., was awarded the Commonwealth Good Citizen Scholarship in the amount of $2,500. The scholarship is awarded by the Association of Independent Colleges and Universities of Pennsylvania. McKinney is a senior English and secondary education dual-major with a minor in history. This scholarship is reserved for full-time undergraduate students who have shown an extraordinary commitment to community service and who have demonstrated creativity in shaping their volunteer activities.

Wilkes University student Patrick Kaczmarczyk of Duryea, Pa., was awarded the UPS Scholarship through the Association of Independent Colleges and Universities of Pennsylvania in the amount of $2,600. Kaczmarczyk is a senior nursing major. The UPS Scholarship is awarded to a student whose background reflects one or more of the characteristics of highest priority to the UPS Foundation and Council of Independent College's First Opportunity Program. Those characteristics include, first generation, low-income, minority, or new American students.
