Wilkes University awarded the Alumni Leadership Award at its 71st spring commencement ceremonies on May 19. The Alumni Leadership Award is given by the Wilkes University Alumni Association to the member of the graduating class considered to have made the strongest contribution to student life and the student activities program of the University.

The region's only collegiate marching band marches in drum corps style, complete with wind and percussion instruments and guard. The Wilkes University Marching Band is one of the most visible groups on campus, performing at home football games and other on- and off-campus events.

Wilkes University Student, Ellen Weber of Gettysburg, Pa., Lands Internship at Smithsonian Environmental Research Center in Annapolis, Md.

Wilkes University junior Ellen Weber of Gettysburg, Pa., will intern with the solar radiation and photobiology lab at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center in Annapolis, Md., this summer. The earth and environmental science major will make a wetlands model to predict the response of wetlands biogeochemical cycling to climate change. Recently, Weber was awarded funds for her proposal to the Northeastern Geological Society of America Stephen A. Pollock undergraduate research grant. Weber's research focuses on paleoclimates. Grace Boyle and Patrice Lonardi of the Jay S. Sidhu School of Business and Leadership were selected to present their research at the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs Conference 2018 from June 8-11, in Kansas City, Mo. Their presentation was selected from among all regional student presentations in the council.

Wilkes University electrical and mechanical engineering majors presented their senior projects and demonstrated them at an event on April 28. It was attended by faculty, friends and family. Engineering students in the University's College of Science and Engineering are required to complete a senior project as part of the requirements to complete their degrees.

Wilkes University Students to Study in Spain with Assistance by Dr. Joseph Donald Stephens, DDS Global Scholars Award

Three Wilkes University students received a scholarship opportunity to study abroad this summer in Spain. Gabriel Velez of Allentown, Pa., Madison Trauger of Perjasie, Pa., and Cassie Oldt of McClure, Pa., received the Dr. Joseph Donald Stephens, DDS Global Scholars Award. The Dr. Joseph Donald Stephens, DDS Global Scholars Award provides students with scholarships to pursue their education in another country. The award was established by Wilkes University alumni Panos Kalaritis '77 and Deborah (Stephens) Kalaritis '78 in honor of her father, Joseph D. Stephens DDS, a 1951 graduate of Wilkes University. While in Spain, the students will take courses at Colegio Mayor Mara in Madrid and Malaga to earn nine credit hours. They will be immersed in the culture, visiting museums, monuments and learning with students local to the region.

Student Pharmacists from Wilkes University Nesbitt School of Pharmacy Participate in Pharmacy Legislative Day, Present Informational Board

Wilkes University student pharmacists Rachel Wood and Katelyn Jimison from the Wilkes University Nesbitt School of Pharmacy, participated in the Pennsylvania Pharmacists Association annual Pharmacy Legislative Day on April 16. Held at the Capital Complex, over 250 students attended to help fight for fair reimbursement. While there, they presented an information board on medication disposal. It explained the importance of proper medication disposal while handing out bags which are used to safely dispose medications.

Jacee Yorks Is Awarded a Fund for Education Abroad Scholarship To Study Abroad

Jacee Yorks of Nescopeck, Pa. received a Fund for Education Abroad Scholarship to support her study abroad program with CAPA The Global Education Network in Sydney, Australia in summer 2018. She was one of 268 scholars who were selected from a pool of over 2,300 applicants representing approximately 517 colleges and universities across the country - an award rate of about four percent. Fund for Education Abroad Scholarships are designed for students seeking a rigorous overseas academic program. Yorks is a business management major and will take management classes for course credits through CAPA The Global Education Network. She will also complete an events management internship at a local business in Sydney. As part of the scholarship, she is required to blog about her different adventures and learning experiences while abroad. Yorks was also a 2017 recipient of the Dr. Joseph Donald Stephens, DDS Global Scholars Award. The Dr. Joseph Donald Stephens, DDS Global Scholars Award provides students with scholarships to pursue their education in another country. Wilkes University Students Complete Research in Hawaii during Spring Break

Wilkes University students participated in field research in Hawaii during spring break. The trip was in conjunction with the spring course, "Geology of Hawaii" taught by Sid P. Halsor, professor of geology and coordinated with the GeoExplorer Club and Bobby Karimi, assistant professor of geology. Students spent several days in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park exploring the volcanic features associated with Kilauea volcano, the most active volcano on earth and in continuous eruption since the current cycle began in 1983. Highlights included a tour and presentation by US Geological Survey geoscientist at the Hawaii Volcano Observatory, close-up observations of active lava flow on the volcanic field and night-time view of the vivid red glow over the Kilauea summit crater where lava fountaining was occurring.

Wilkes University Theatre Presents A Chorus Line, April 12-15

Wilkes University Theatre presents the Pulitzer Prize- and Tony Award-winning musical A Chorus Line. The performances will take place on April 12, 13 and 14 at 8 p.m. with matinee performances on April 14 and 15 at 2 p.m. The production is at Wilkes' Dorothy Dickson Darte Center for the Performing Arts, 239 S. River St., Wilkes-Barre.

Wilkes University Students Participate in Community Service in Costa Rica in Alternative Spring Break

Wilkes University students participated in an alternative spring break trip in Costa Rica volunteering with the sports committee of San Marcos. The students worked with the organization to paint the playground, basketball court and assisted with the sand box installation. Isolated from the main provinces of the central valley of Costa Rica, San Marcos and the region of Los Santos have a lack of services and extra curriculum activities for children and youth.

Wilkes University Students Participate in Alternative Spring Break with Guanin Center, Inc.

Wilkes University students participated in an alternative spring break trip in the Dominican Republic, volunteering with The Guanin Center, Inc. in La Piedra, Santo Domingo. The students worked with the organization to teach the community English. The children and community leaders took English second language classes taught by Wilkes students. Students also interacted with the community members of La Piedra. Alternative spring break offers students an opportunity to perform community service while experiencing a different culture and developing their leadership, teamwork and critical thinking skills. Crystal Cool, assistant director of diversity affairs; Erica Acosta, associate director of diversity affairs; and Tyisha Williams, assistant professor of biology accompanied the students on the trip.
